Alignments are descriptive, not prescriptive, and players leaning on alignment over personality, background, and the like are simply bad at roleplaying.

You don’t act based on alignment, it’s just a descriptive tool. You act based on what your character’s personality and background is. The paladin in this case is acting according to her code and would not suffer a crisis of the faith.

It’s worth noting that Carrot transitions from Lawful Good to Neutral Good across the series. When he starts out, he follows the literal interpretation of the law, up to and including arresting and then defending from a mob a dragon. Towards the end of the series, he’s learned that not every law in the books is worth
