The issue wasn’t the comment itself though, it was the timing. She said this after years of ripping off the sounds, themes and imagery of hip-hop to further her career, in the middle of an (ill-conceived, unsuccessful) attempt to re-vamp her image into a family friendly country western star. It seemed calculated to

Say it louder for the people in the back

Yup.

If she wanted to make non-misogynistic hip hop, she could have collaborated with hip hop artists who don’t make misogynistic stuff. Missy Elliott anyone? She chose the style she wanted because she wanted the shock value of it and to make money and once she was done she not only walked away but shat on it on her way

She also used Black Women’s bodies for her aesthetic then threw those dancers to the side when she went back the music that made her money.

I’m also not super-outraged by Miley’s comments either, but I don’t think it was only the fact that she criticized hip-hop that bothered people.

Ehhh...Black woman here. With some exceptions, of course, current mainstream hip-hop is incredibly materialist and misogynistic, as is lots of pop music (mainstream hip-hop IS, in fact, pop music). I get that as a “privileged White woman” it’s not kosher to state publicly that you don’t like mainstream hip-hop but

because they’re “not like other girls” this is internalized mysogyny per usual. per since the beginning of time we have been pitted against each other. I’m so tired. So fucking tired, but I used to be them. Not evangelical...I was the other way. Party girl, fun girl, cool girl, smart girl unlike “OTHER GIRLS.” Gross.

Bingo. If these people aren’t working together I’ll eat my hat.

And it needs to be shouted from the rooftops again and again: This is not an unintentional consequence of FOSTA/SESTA. This was the goal. The goal was always to keep sex workers marginalized and frightened so that they could be easily abused and exploited. “Protection” was always a smokescreen. This is, and has always

Jezebel and Splinter are going to cause us to lose in 2020.

You know who bears responsibility for this kind of shit? People like you who are only here to stir the pot for your own fake-ass “psychological experiments.” Go fuck yourself.

Apparently anyone can fall prey to joining a cult even you and me.

I used to wonder that too but I started thinking like they’re no different than the abusive ex-boyfriend who pretended to be good to get you to like him & turned into a monster later. He knew he couldn’t reveal his true identity because he knew you wouldn’t accept him. And the fact that he can change his character is

If they are, indeed, calling the rapist a parent.

1. Fuck this guy for calling a rapist a “parent.”

And calling the rapist a parent...

My exact thought. It was a good piece, but that kept ringing in my ear. Why/how in the world are female friendships more confusing than a male “friend” who continues to sexually assault you or the mutual friend who tells you what you did wasn’t right?

This is so good. And mirrors so much of what I feel. Hopeless and angry and just so fucking full of rage at the class of men that I don’t know what to do with myself.

This was amazing. Thank you for writing!
