I’m fairly certain that they used data to derive the formula. The textbook I use didn’t go into that much detail on the formula. Google hasn’t been much help. However, I did find a paper that supported the effectiveness of the formula.

Coincidentally, I taught this in my College Algebra class last week.

Brzycki’s Formula: M = w/(1.0278 - 0.0287 * n)

M = maximum weight
w = weight lifted
n = number of repetitions

That is the line I wanted in the video.
