This is gross until we realize that paying poor people to hurt themselves for our entertainment is pretty much what sports is. 

The median income for a household in 1979 was 16k. An umpire maxed out their income at 40k for 8 months work. Umpires made a living far superior to most Americans at their time, these weren’t steamfitters or teamsters working paycheck to paycheck.
