A modern, lightweight car with good tires and an attentive driver would've braked in plenty of time. That truck will live another day to get T-boned by the next guy.

As far as defensive driving goes, assuming someone else will do something (even something they should be doing) is a no-no, especially when it leaves you no out. There are a lot of drivers out there who do illogical things.
