The synopsis of a plot has very little impact on its quality — a lot of Shakespeare's plays were essentially reworks of previous stories, and you'll find few people who agree that there wasn't any point in doing a play of them. It's all in the telling.

You hire people to do work. If that work is no longer required, then the people are no longer required. I don't think companies are or should be under any obligation to employ people out of altruism.

I find it strange that people adopt such strong feelings towards people whose circumstances they're almost entirely unaware of.
