I kinda see that. FFX at the time felt like a tech demo showing off their summons with just enough of plot/gameplay to give a reason to show off the summons. I’d argue NPC’s, quests, exploration, story, and dialog are elements of an adventure game, not intrinsic elements of an RPG.

It just so happens that the vast majority of RPG’s are really adventure/RPG hybrids, to the point where everybody just leaves off the adventure part when talking about them.
