Nah, it turns out the articles description of the finding isn’t particularly accurate. Somebody else in a post explains it way better. It wasn’t simply a finding that “Arbery’s medical privacy, even though he is dead, is more important than the rights of the men”.

AFAIK, whether or not Arbery was validly acting in self defense doesn’t actually negate whether or not the killers were. One of the issues with Citizen’s arrest and stand your ground laws is that they easily create scenarios where everybody involved can be legally acting in self defense.

The medical records qualify under a 401 relevance standard if they have “any tendency to make the existence of any fact that is of consequence to the determination for the action more probable or less probable than it would be without the evidence” (at p. 8). I’d assume their argument is that they saw what they thought was a crime in progress (Robbery) and attempted to execute a citizens arrest. (Legal at the time, from what I can tell, though after this incident the law in question was changed such that merely witnessing what you believe is a crime is no longer valid…
