As far as I can recall, the Matt and Nora episodes were my favourites too. As @General_Specific:disqus said, season 2 is a lot better. I think of the first season as being an adaptation of the book, and seasons 2 and 3 as something else, with a new credits sequence to emphasise that it is indeed something else.
I definitely remember some articles/reviews that I didn't like at the time, but I thought many of the responses to her and her work were obnoxious.
Most of the complaints seem to be about Sonia Saraiya. I had momentarily forgotten about that. I have to say that I don't like the cut of that commenter's jib ("Sonia needs to be fired for her clear racism against whites. And her xenophobia."). Maybe Todd liked that post accidentally, or something.
