Honestly it had to be a prequel anyway since thematically and historically the first game was about the death of the wild west.

I have a feeling it will be the latter, in the early days Rockstar made some big milestones in the open world genre, but it seems the last decade or so they’ve gotten by with just improving that formula a little bit each time.
