Did you light the three braziers around the map before you started the fight? It makes the fight much easier. After you light them when you go in you will have braziers out in the open which you can use to heat up your weapon for a big fire elemental boost.

Nintendo probably realizes making them smaller would associate them with the handheld market, and as they are aggressively positioning the Switch as a home console, they probably opted to keep them bigger in line with home-console game boxes.
