That’s all well and good, but the sheer number of confederate memorials came at the height of Jim Crow and were meant to support white supremacy. The Union not only won the Civil War but had a righteous cause which history commemorates. Whataboutism isn’t going to help you here. 

So even your ancestor knew he was fighting on the wrong side with the Confederates. 

I get your point. People on the losing side of a rebellion seldom get statues in any country. It happens, but not very often.

The ones who fought for the Confederacy were unambiguous traitors. They even called themselves “rebels”. Traitors, especially those on the losing side of an insurrection, especially those fighting for chattel slavery, don’t deserve heroic monuments. 

On that note, “Daughters of the Confederacy” is just a nice way of declaring you commemorate treason and domestic terror. At the very least they should be put on “No-Fly lists”
