I’ve been pretty dismayed at how many people are focusing on trying to parse out whether his issue was with Asians, women or sex workers, as if it couldn’t be (as it clearly was) all three. You don’t need to be a Trump supporter to get riled up by the rhetoric that’s going around. Minority groups have always been pitted against each other by the supremacist culture. So if the wider culture is giving you permission to act on your worst impulses, well, there you go.

If we’re to believe the shooter’s defense (which, I guess, the cops really really want us to do) he views the parlors as places of sin. Rather than take it upon himself to fix his problems he wanted to “cleanse” his environment of sin. He wanted to eliminate Asian women. He viewed them as contaminating him.

Thank you for acknowledging that this was both anti-Asian and anti-woman violence. All of the coverage that is failing to call out the targeting of (specifically Asian) women is making me crazy. I imagine there are many other school districts who will be more than happy to employ this teacher. That said, I’m a little surprised this happened in Austin. I mean, I know it’s Texas but everyone always claims that Austin is a tiny oasis in a state full of crazy.
