As much as I loved Parks & Rec, I thought it was interesting that with the exception of a white/Puerto Rican character’s Puerto Rican mother, the POC rarely had their POC relatives show up in episodes.

exactly. if we needed and waited on white saviors to help us,we’d be nowhere. definitely,we would not be where we are today.

Now playing

There is a great talk by Waleed Aly on the controversy this year in Australia regarding Adam Goodes - an exceptional AFL player who is Aboriginal and who was treated appallingly by sporting audiences after saying and doing various things that made them uncomfortable. He talks about us being tolerant until a minority

It’s unlikely that it just so happened they were the best person for the job. It’s unlikely a black woman would’ve even been considered.

gawd,i love ben hall’s response! they always got us crying and suffering (if they ain’t got us magical negro-ing for ‘em). i could go on with more racist tropes but you get my point.

So very true. Patricia Arquette gets a standing O from Meryl for talking about “equality.” Ms. Davis’ wonderful speech gets this response from a soap actress:

Did I say they were racist? No. The Hollywood Liberals like to espouse progressive values but doesn’t actually live up to them. When it comes to embracing diversity, the Hollywood Left isn’t that different than the Right.

You butthurt Orphan Black fans are just embarrassing yourselves all over the internet. Tatiana Maslany will probably have more opportunities to win awards after she leaves Orphan Black than most WoC ever will.

You can’t win an emmy for roles that aren’t created or available (sorry for the paraphrase)...TAKE THAT MATT DAMON. In many cases the roles that are offering success for women of color in the last three years have been created by Shonda Rhimes and her success then galvanized ‘majority people’ to reconsider their

You perfectly summed up so many people’s feelings about this. The response was awkward and embarrassing. They should have been on their God damn feet applauding. The fact that she is the first black woman to win this award, and in a little over three months it will be 2016 is just incomprehensible.

They weren’t excited enough to see a black person win = racist. C’mom, man. (I remember all this same bullshit when Denzel and Halle won oscars OVER 10 YEARS AGO.

Sorry about the shitty screen shot, but I had to capture the serious eyerolls coming from Lena Dunham(?) and Amy Poehler(?) in the front row as the camera panned the audience at the end of the speech. WTF.

Thank you! I was screaming at the TV. I believe my words were - Stand up, mother fuckers! AMY, NO!

Look at the audience’s faces and reactions. Only a few bothered to clap and towards the end a couple of people stood up but the rest were sitted.

I was thinking the same thing. It was honestly startling to look at the audience and see the reactions or lack there of from people. She is an amazing woman and her speech was nothing less than amazing as well!

Watching the blank slate of disinterested white faces that didn’t have the energy to stand up and applaud for such a moving and needed speech was depressing. So much of the audience was apathetic to the content and delivery. Damn we live in a twisted world.

As the aunt of a dark skinned niece who, at 8 months old, has already had outrageously racist things said about her, I am so happy to see Viola Davis win. I am happy to see Viola Davis on tv, period. The scene where she took off her wig/makeup was historic. My niece is a happy, curious, stubborn, affectionate

Black Girls are Magic! It’s lit as hell!

Words like “perfect” and “brilliant” are completely overused these days, so I say this sincerely: the use of that Tubman quote in this situation was both brilliant and perfect.

The tepid response to her awesome speech speaks volumes. Hollywood’s limousine liberals don’t like to be confronted with the truth.
