It would cost so, so much more money. The entire search has cost about $200 million, and the cost of putting a single satellite into orbit is between $50 and $400 million, which doesn’t include the cost of actually designing and building a satellite.

Keep in mind that the lost plane was a 777 whose core design was completed in the 1980's. The lost plane was built in 2002. Airplanes are expensive... Even more expensive to retrofit with technology not originally designed into the airframe - especially when airlines in first world countries typically start retiring…
