I think he’s sounding like a grumpy old man.  I can get that the headlights are made to have this carved inset look, they look fine in pics but seeing one one in the wild will tell.  Many cars are using the “carved from clay” look to add visual oomph with a few extra details.  Otherwise the soap bar look.

My in-laws got hosed big time by their GM dealer. They had a nice Cadillac sedan but the old lady wanted a new SUV just coming into style. They had to break their Caddie lease and ended up paying more per month for a used- Blazer and locked in longer term.

Recent years could be competition, the Hyundai/Kia twins for example beat Toyota on styling, features and cost, forcing Toyota to up their game. They probably otherwise would have stayed with slow evolution as per up to 2013.
