I'm not sure if you mean the metal electrodes on the handles, or the machine's display itself, but you can get a chest strap heart rate monitor that goes around your chest, and most machines will pick up the signal on their display. I found that those are more accurate (as long as it is positioned correctly).

Have you tried one of the ferries? Port Jefferson or Orient Point, depending where on LI you are headed. I've heard good things about the experience but never used them myself.

Yes, absolutely. I love simulators, and agree there should be a driving one that has no real goals. You could also do what MS did in FSX and have missions available for those who choose to do them alongside a totally separate free-roam mode.
