Photosynth in my experience (now I'm talking specifically about the iOS app) creates a spherical panorama from pictures taken standing in a spot and rotating around. Is that what Photosphere does?

It doesn't have the lines of a seagoing vessel. I prefer a nice sailing ship, personally.

These are the kinds of ground-floor half-assed knockoffs that are easily avoided by waiting until next fall (or later) to upgrade to a lightning device. I'm invested in the iOS ecosystem, but not so much that I don't recognize an awkward (and easily avoidable) transition phase.

Yup. The 2008 models were a great choice. Mine has lasted all this time and still feels like new. Some RAM and an SSD is all you need.

And the connector is less of an issue with the ipad, because you only have to plug it in, what, once or twice a week? If that? I usually charge my ipad 2 once on the weekend and sometimes midweek.

My guess is that they couldn't hit the margins they wanted to selling an iPad 3 for that price. They will probably be on the refurb store for around that price, though.

My iPad 2 still runs like a champ on the latest version of iOS and any apps I've used, so I see no reason why this device would be anything but buttery smooth.

I won't be buying one. Why would I buy something which doesn't serve my needs? I've never bought an iMac.
