I agree, but part of the problem is that people don't change carriers on a whim, so it's very difficult to effectively vote with your wallet. Also, they are just colluding anyway. I don't think it will change unless the government steps in and forces it.

I think everyone has a bit of confirmation bias when they think about the place they choose as their home, so asking someone why they choose to live somewhere is always a loaded question. That said, there are better places and worse places. But they are all places, with their own sort of charm and their own advantages

$25 fee, even if you pay with your bank account? Or is that a credit card fee? My landlord has that as well and there is a fee for credit card payments. I use their direct deposit option, which is free and avoids me having to write checks every month.

Bankruptcy at least only screws you for like a decade. If he has to pay this off it's like he just bought a McMansion and he isn't allowed to live in it.

*Kazaa

Seriously though, can he declare bankruptcy and get rid of this or will it stay with him forever? I have a hard time believing that the RIAA will actually ever collect this ridiculous sum of money from the kid.

It's wrong, wash bucket. Oh, it would be sweet for a while, but in the back of our minds we'd know that I'm a man and you're janitorial equipment.
