I remember my elementary school banned Simpsons merchandise on the grounds that it encouraged children to be disrespectful to their parents. The furor over Bart's trouble-making seems so quaint now (which the show itself commented on in that episode where Lisa makes new friends at the shore).

The scenes at the Flanders's house feel so specific to me. I think everyone can remember the first time they went over to a friend's house and realized that 'normal' is entirely relative and how unsettling that realization was.

I had to look up the movie you're talking about and that's the thing I think they'll do. Cable TV has no problem with this sort of brutality (something along those lines happened in the first season of Sons of Anarchy) and, like it or not, the incident is important for this particular character arc.

I'm curious to see how far they'll deviate from the comics for the Governor's story arc. There are two particularly nasty plot points associated with him. I bet they'll go with one but not the other.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed that Sony and/or NBC won't decide to shut it down. The recent publicity (including a tweet by Donald Glover: https://twitter.com/DonaldG… is a mixed blessing.

Not really. Deadwood in space sounds more like the new Battlestar Galactica. Except that's not quite right either since, to be very simplistic, Deadwood was about building a civilization and BSG was about the end of one.
