It seems pretty clear to me that Rizzo isn’t aiming for the plate. Hedges is set in front of the plate, and Rizzo aims for Hedges, not the plate. It seems to me like he’s breaking the rule.

Yeah, Rizzo was outside the line until suddenly he wasn’t. You can literally see his path change drawn in the dirt where his foot dragged. Went completely out of the way to slam him and then had to fall back the other direction to land on the plate.

If they had showed more of an overhead shot of the play, you could clearly see that Rizzo veered to the left (which was to the front of home plate where the catcher was positioned) when he easily could have slid straight down the line or even towards the back of home plate. It looks like Hedges did indeed give Rizzo a path to the plate. Catchers are sitting ducks...looking at the baseball while a lumberjack barrels full speed towards you.

Rizzo was dead wrong. He absolutely swerved to hit the catcher instead of trying to slide into home plate. He should be suspended until Hedges is back at 100%.
