My solution to reconciling all of this was to just treat it as another fantastical element of the setting. If I can buy that a guy can run on walls then I guess I can buy a world where the police deserve the level of trust the game gives them.

You’ve got it backwards, the pearls are the best way to go; you can find tons on planets with few sentinels. Get yourself a big stockpile, then farm them; as they are the only one of those three items you can grow yourself.

Don’t worry too much about the map or upgrades! Destiny takes a more minimal approach to showcasing whats around you on your screen as well as the map; just wander as you wish and use the upgrades that seem more fun to you.
