I realize that desperation to be cool and snarky can lead to some questionable things. Calling this a “boast” when it was clearly not is one of them:

The incentive is that the money going into the plan is pre-tax.  Unless you have really bad options as to how that money can be allocated the pre-tax benefit is probably going to outweigh what  you gain in the ( fewer ) after tax dollars you can invest on your own.

If that 401k benefit is accurate, did you take it into account before accepting the job? Half a percent of the first three percent is ridiculously low.

I had a similar experience to yours except I took the opportunity to buy discounted gift cards and pay for them with PayPal credit so 1) I got a discount for our Home Depot purchase taking some of the sting out of it and 2) 6 months to pay for it w/ no interest.
