The M’s are actually a bit different. Push right to toggle between Drive and Manual, left and forward for reverse. Forward and back are only there to shift up and down if you choose to not use the paddles.

The up/down arrows on the shifter are to adjust between the 3 shift settings. Lowest setting is less aggressive and shifts softer/earlier. Highest setting is quickest shifts at much higher RPMs. M cars have had this for a while, but it used to just be one button and not on the shifter itself. They call it “DriveLogic”…

I’ve worked some ride-and-drive events for BMW, which usually include demo rides with professionals (mostly drifting).
