Indeed. Perhaps Ford didn’t become “famous” because he tended to write in such wildly different styles. No long series for him....
Here’s a report from a few days ago:
And there were more buildings right on the shore up north—we’ve known about storm surge in Texas since 1900.
A lovely replica of Lafayette’s Hermione visited our shores recently.
And Houston had some really major flooding on Tax Day this year. Not as bad as Louisiana’s recent floods, but a bit of a mess....
Houston is not going overboard but the authorities are keeping track of mosquitoes here. We have a humid, rainy climate & plenty of the correct breed of mosquito. We also have lots of international travel—so a Zika patient could fly in & start it up here.
Zika is a legitimate concern in some parts of the US. Florida, for sure. Here in Houston, our pest control people are monitoring the mosquitoes for Zika. Aedes aegypti carry Zika (& Dengue)—and are quite common here. Dengue can be pretty minor but complications are possible—better to avoid it. (The same mosquito…
It’s just sloppy use of the word. Texas History taught me the definition of “decimate.” The Meir Expedition was a bunch of Anglo imperialists who invaded Mexico & got caught. They were made to draw beans—one in ten was black & that guy was executed. (This Remington hangs in the MFAH.)
Syphilis is generally considered to be exceptional: A disease that went from the New World to the Old. There are several other diseases in the running as the Athenian plague.
Connie Willis has written several books about the near-future time-travelling “Historians” of Oxford University. Domesday Book is excellent, if a bit grim. An archaeological dig in “the present” looses The Pandemic on the world; nobody is immune, many fall ill & quite a few die. One of the early feverish victims…
I’ve already posted two Supernatural examples. Then, there’s the Musical Episode.
Hercules wasn’t as good as Xena but definitely had its moments. Like the tribute to Strictly Ballroom. (With a visit from the Widow Twankey, a Pantomime character.)
I mentioned Supernaural! Then there’s “Monster Movie”—classic B&W horror. (And Dean in lederhosen.)
And Anthony Stewart Head had played Rocky Horror....
Even from the very beginning, there were little flashback bits that began to tell the whole story. Of how the characters developed. Including The Machine.
Supernatural is another show that did quite a few “different” episodes. The one where the boys were trapped in TVland included a Medical Show bit. And an “I hate police procedurals” bit....
I have no wish to “censor” anything. But I don’t have HBO—don’t even have cable. Why should I pay extra to subsidize entertainment I don’t find entertaining.
I live in flyover country. I know what “corn fed” means.
As I said, the scene itself wasn’t enough to turn me off the show. Responses like “fuck off you hyper sensitive twat” convinced me to get my entertainment elsewhere.
