It’s bullshit. It’s another “We’re women, but we’re not like THOSE women, They are YUCKY!”

In other words, “All Lives Matter”??

“How many words can you type per minute?”

Yeah?

Whoa, womanism is a valid alternative to feminism.

Which is so fucking weird considering the movie she's promoting.

Why? Is she planning to run for office in a red state? It’s not like she’ll get fewer roles of she identifies as a feminist.

It’s like answering the question “Do you eat tofu?” with “I’m a vegetarian.” Okay, those two things are loosely related, and I suppose being a vegetarian I might choose to assume you eat tofu - perhaps that is what you are hoping I’ll assume? - but it still doesn’t answer the question.

I mean, I would LOVE if they asked dudes this question too. I would die to hear Robert DeNiro answer this during his Intern press junket. Given Matt Damon’s current foot-in-mouth campaign, I bet he would do a bang-up job asked this question. But if ANY woman should be asked this question, it’s a person who has touted

I think it’s more like if they asked her “do you support gay rights?” And then she answered “I’m a rules utilitarian”. Like, that doesn’t answer the fucking question. And in this case it’s clear that she was reluctant to identify as feminist because she feels like it’s a dirty word or something.

I wish they’d stop asking women this and start asking more men this... and get them to explain why/why not

Well considering the fact that she’s doing press for a film about women winning the right to vote and brought up issues of gender equality all on her own, it seems a pretty fair question in this case.

I mean, I agree with you and her 100% when it comes to semantics, and I’m the sort of person that would probably be caught saying this in an interview because I believe in equal treatment of all genders across the board etc. etc. There’s nothing WRONG with humanism and respecting the agency of all people, just like

That’s my issue with the response. To each their own, if you consider yourself a humanist then fine. But it feels like many people are using the term humanist to call themselves feminist without actually using the word feminist. It’s well past time we realize feminist isn’t a dirty/outdated word.

Humanism is more of an answer to theism than it is to social equity. What she said is more akin to saying, “I’m not a democrat; I’m an atheist.” That’s the problem...people assume the definition of humanism because it’s got the word human in it. And Feminism is about parity and balance, which is what she’s saying

Calling yourself a humanist who “believes in an easy balance (between the genders)“ in direct response to the question “Are you a feminist” implies that humanism is some sort of alternate belief system about gender equality. It’s not. Point being, she chose a non-scary word instead of using the scary F word.

If I hear about one more obviously feminist woman dodge the “Are you a feminist?” question like it’s a grenade....

I’ve always called myself a secular humanist and a feminist. I was not aware we were supposed to pick sides. Or that there were sides.

Jesus Christ if people don’t know what humanism is they should stop using the word. Yes even you Meryl.

I kinda said something like this the other day here, and it was pointed out that I was indeed a feminist. Some pointed it out more kindly than others, but I've been learning a lot here. I think Meryl should visit this site! I think she too could benefit from it.
