A lot of people are saying this exact explanation.

I wanted to give my middle-schoolers Trump speeches and Trump-isms to decipher and grade.

I do quite like that it ignores the fact that if we’re saying that a parties history defines the party, then the current republicans are all liberals.

awful shit they’ve been doing since the Nixon administration.

In fact, it really started with Roosvelt and the new deal when the dems started becoming the reform party, and then barry goldwater sealed it, making the dems the party of civil rights and prompting all of the white southern voters to switch sides to the repubs

You know, the president who led a war to push federal power over state’s rights.

This is the incisive political commentary I miss from Gawker. Glad you’re here to deliver it!

Lincoln was a “Republican” in the same way that George W. Bush was an opthamologist. That is to say, there is about as much chance that Lincoln would be a Republican today as there is that W. could fit you for contacts.

This is probably his greatest contribution to society. Think of the life of a rollerblade cover salesman he missed out on by starting out with all that money. He could have done some good in this world.

Goals and policies are not the same. How is this so hard to understand? Ich WANT a rainbow unicorn, but telling myself that i will get one is not a strategy.

The “party of Lincoln” also consists of people fighting to keep the Confederate flag, a symbol of treason, on government property.

I thought that war was about Lincoln usurping state’s rights, not slavery. How will I ever get a decent SAT score if the narratives keep changing?

Especially when Bill O’ Reilly wants to remind you that they were “Well fed and given lodging”.

Abraham Lincoln is basically the Republican Party’s collective “Black Friend”. They all get to say, “Oh, I’m not racist, because I know this guy”, and they have the added benefit of not actually having to associate with, y’know... actual black people.

To be fair, Lincoln is just like todays Republican in that he payed lip service to the movement but didn’t ACTUALLY do anything to help them. (Remember the emancipation proclamation only applied to states that were in open rebellion with the US, slaves in Union states were still property.)

My favorite part was when Trump had to wear the Jewish prayer shawl.

Sadly, Trump’s proclamation that he’s going to revitalize Detroit with his non specific plan of “New factories, roads, bridges and schools everywhere”, is only the second biggest crock of shit a politician has told the people of Michigan this year.

Middle school me would have died for that invention. That may be the best thing he or his lackeys ever did.

Drumpf offered policy specifics for the inner cities: he called for a revitalized Motor City, with “factories everywhere” and “new roads and bridges” as well as “new schools—especially schools.”

One of the great honors of my life was when my elementary school held an invention fair and invited Donald Trump to help judge the competition. He didn’t show up like he promised, but he sent a representative with his submission, a pair of rollerblades with a wheel cover so you could walk on grass.
