The question I have is, why the swivel? The dash doesn’t move, the heater levers move on their path but obviously don’t move back and forth with the front seats, why does the spotlight need to move? Especially if it cost VW a tenth of a pfennig more.

They were worse than what had come before in terms of room. The Mustang killed space efficiency for a whole generation of cars because Detroit applied the long hood/short deck look to EVERYTHING. You could buy cars for $3800 in 1975 that weren’t as cynical as the Granada or as stripped as the Rabbit which was overpriced due to the $/DM relationship.

IIRC the mid ‘90s final generation Toyota Tercel (“Standard” trim level) had the last blanking-panel-where-the-right-side-mirror should’ve been. It also had the last 4 speed manual transmission, and if you were in Canada you *would* get a passenger’s side mirror but no airbags. 

Stencil paint was common too, but in salt country it didn’t last because your factory-painted step bumper had to be repainted annually and having the dealer do it was just Not Done, they’d probably have laughed in your face and quoted a go-away price if you did.
