I upgraded from a 4200+ to an i7 920 last May and saw a huge performance boost. I'd say if you don't live near a Microcenter(.com) then go with the AMD x6. If you do have one with in 1-2 hour drive you get net huge savings since they have really cheap i7s (go socket 1155), 2600k cpu. ($280 vs $330 from MC)
