I’d cut the filmmaker’s some slack until proven guilty. These are (imo) the best, most popular New Mutant characters. Karma was never that exciting and her telepathy based powers might feel too similar to Dani Moonstar’s abilities. Dani is a much cooler character.

“Since any authority can be infiltrated and corrupted, the only authority I will answer to is myself.” It is essentially sovereign citizen dogma, if you scratch the surface.

The film actually delves deep into the theme you are suggesting.

One is a “Han Solo-like” male who grew up in the shadow of his grandfather before developing powers and becoming a superhero. The other is an African-American woman who is also a member of an “elite paramilitary team living in the 1940s”, looked down upon by her peers for her race and gender.

You’re doing fine, Rob. You’ve become my favorite comic book bloggers, and Whitbrook and Trendacosta have kept the site engaging. I’m going miss CJA a lot and things are going to be different now, but in the meanwhile...

MAKE WESTEROS GREAT AGAIN!

Actually, going “full Ramsay” would have meant having Walda choose between killing the baby herself or watch it be fed to the hounds. He losing his touch.

Worse, Jon can only say “You know nothing.”, irritating everybody.

Oh no! Even though I know you are leaving to concentrate on your true calling, my heart sinks. Your fictions, essays, reviews, debates, lessons, fantasy brackets and editorials have been a regular, favorite part of my day for the last three years (I know: I’m a rookie). I’ve been elated whenever you’ve responded

I can understand Kirk Cameron’s point of view. Look at all the hilarious mixups and misunderstandings that resulted from Mrs. Seaver going off to work, leaving poor Dr. Seaver to watch after the kids. Female empowerment wreaked havoc with that household.

Nice catch, but that just doesn’t seem like a safe environment for a baby in the first place.

I think he might be Eddie Thawne.

No worries. We are not going to agree, but there is validity to your points. Context is not indispensable on the one hand, but I can’t watch the Cosby show the same way on the other. That said, it is going to be a rare occasion to find an artist with a spotless, completely virtuous reputation, because that’s not what

I appreciate the thoughtfulness of your response, although I don’t entirely agree with your points and your judgement of the author’s intent. You don’t need to resort to name calling to get your views across. I do believe we should judge works in the contexts of the period in which they were created. But those

I’ll cede your points, although Big Trouble was intended to be pure farce imo. I don’t think I fall into the group you are referencing and fully acknowledge that I enjoyed Highlander.

Ha, no I don’t feel bad at all. There is a lot of popular culture and art that is insensitive or even derogatory that I appreciate. Some, like Triumph of the Will, I respect for undeniable craftsmanship and achievement. Others, like John Ford westerns or NWA, I have a genuine affection and a certain affinity for the

I liked the humor in Highlander, love the Queen soundtrack, and enjoy Lambert and Connery. Some of the filmmaking was just plain weak. I would argue that Big Trouble in Little China did exactly what it set out to do (though Kurt Russell’s co-star — the hero — wasn’t that charismatic). I also think when you compare

Highlander is fun but it isn’t really that good a movie. Kurgan is great, everything else is slightly goofy (Lambert and Connery playing a Scotsman and a Spaniard) or actually weak (the female protagonists aren’t memorable). Krull was about as good as doesn’t get half the attention.

I wouldn’t dream of denying anyone their KKK or slavery era nostalgia, or westerns that imply that indigenous tribes had it coming. Or their Dancehall Reggae that states killing homosexuals is a good thing, rap that says all women are basically prostitutes or rock and roll that extolls the joys of having sex with

Birth of a Nation, Gone With The Wind, The Taming of the Shrew can all be considered art, but are animated by principles that are garbage. The same can be said for a lot of rock and roll and hip hop. What is the problem with calling that out?
