How about we meet in the middle?
i lol'd
Actually I'm not even sure if there is a distinct biological urge to reproduce. There might just be the biological urge to have sex and the biological urge to protect offspring once you can see them.
I wonder if most people who attach strong value to genetic legacy acknowledge that their line (not to mention the species itself) will eventually cease to exist.
Thanks for the interesting talk, btw. I respect your opinion even though I don't agree due to things like collective human knowledge, agriculture, conservation, etc. Eventually, humanity dies at the end of our timeline. And then our DNA isn't so important. Though I understand where you're coming from.
Natural selection itself is utterly mindless, purposeless, and neutral towards outcomes.
Good points. There certainly is more than our genes as a legacy that we can pass on. In the grand scheme of things (at least in my view) those other things are bonuses. I retract my "only legacy' claim and replace it with "most important legacy". After all, if we all give up reproducing there'll be no-one left to…
Do most people really find a tenuous genetic line lasting 10,000 years more personally meaningful to them than an accomplishment recognized for a shorter period of time? Or do they just try to pretend that their legacy might end up being eternal?
yeah solid points but clearly you're taking the group benefit meaningful legacy view and I'm taking the individual meaningful legacy view. I accept your points on group benefit that there are other meaningful legacies to leave but can you provide a sound example of a more meaningful individual legacy over 10 000…
Good points. to flesh out my argument a bit more in terms of "only one" To me, the genetic legacy is the most important to an individual. certainly your example of agriculture is sound for humanity as a whole but for the men and women who pioneered it and did not have descendants, for them individually it has no…
That's cool if you see it differently. I'm just making the argument that a genetic legacy is more meaningful from a certain perspective. No prob if you disagree with the argument or have a different perspective. If you choose not to have kids to leave the future a better place for my descendants then I am grateful to…
but your genetic legacy is the only legacy that matters in the long run. nobody knows what other legacy mitochondrial Eve left. 10 000 years from now, all that will be left of you is your descendants.
How do you play with them when they're in the packaging? Tragic only being able to look at them.
If only Palestine had a Nelson Mandela or a Gandhi to advocate for their independence.
I see your point but could you tell they were women otherwise? lego minifigs are a bit lacking in secondary sexual characteristics. I think it was more a decision to make them more obviously women than anything else.
I suppose you thought everyone should have just shut up about that silly Apartheid misunderstanding in the 80's too?
BallpitCoin. get on it.
I sense an opening for BallpitCoin!
We can't have them seeing vaginas all over the place! They might think it's natural or normal to have one!
