I think she explained how the word was inappropriate for *our* time but it was considered fair at the time.

I think when we read Huck Finn in elementary school, our teacher was *adamant* about everyone calling the character Jim. The word was still in the book, but we never once used it aloud.

Some of the other commenters have a better handle on this issue than I do. But I have to admit I’m glad you’re not claiming victimhood.
