Most of the cool effects arent very highly detailed. Being able to see "object pickup over here" way off to the left is pretty useful though. Being able to see "fire to the left, open space to the right" makes it easier to determine which way you'll run.

True. Sounds like smart kids, so they wont have troubles. But consider that the standards have changed slightly over the years too. You're expected to know more than just DOS for school by the time you're 16 nowadays. But you're most likely correct.
