Elijah Wood gives Viggo a run for his money. Eternal Sunshine, Everything is Illuminated, and Green Street were all small films that got overwhelmingly good receptions.

I think he was yearning to do something more intimate, I doubt the box office figures overly concerned him.

Birdman came out in 2014, bud.

I think that's what 'Hidalgo' was: his next big action epic. And from what I've read, doing that movie is what convinced him to go for the smaller and less loud projects.
