For the record, I like the movie. I still think think the fat jokes are in poor taste. Average sized women are called fat all the fucking time, so it’s not like it’s super obvious that the people insulting her weight are delusional.

It is bizarre, isn’t it? This movie came out when I was 14 and I actually saw it in theaters— the “Ooooh would we call her chubby?” scene that Cathy posted above got a huge laugh from the crowd, as did the part where her Dad calls her “Plumpy,” so arguing that it’s not played for laughs is pretty odd. It stands out…
It’s not entirely surprising that she would choose to keep the babies, but the fact that abortion was never even mentioned as a possibility is pretty regressive I think.
Have you? People calling her fat is literally a running gag throughout the entire movie.

I am living proof that even girls from very religious families get abortions. Some of them use that as a catalyst to break away from their upbringing entirely (like I did) whereas others choose to terminate and continue to fight against other women’s right to do the same (“the only moral abortion is my abortion”).…

I never said he shouldn’t be allowed to advocate for his “devoutly held beliefs,” merely that he should not be able to force those beliefs on others.

What about the lives of women who don’t want to be pregnant? It’s fine for him to be personally against abortion, but anyone who supports making abortion illegal cannot claim to call themselves pro-life— because if safe, legal abortion is outlawed, women will die.
Friar James Martin is a good guy. I follow him on Facebook and he is not shy about calling out so-called “Christians” who oppose allowing refugees into the country and generally live unkind, hypocritical lives.
And you seem “super invested” in ignoring the facts of the case in favor of regurgitating talking points that the media spoon fed you!
It’s honestly crazy how determined people are to ignore the evidence (or lack thereof) in this case.
