I wish this would stop being called a fucking fantasy. These fuckers raped and murdered a child, full stop.

You need to re-read 1984. The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, by Emmanuel Goldstein, describes the Party’s ideology as an Oligarchical Collectivism, which “rejects and vilifies every principle for which the Socialist movement originally stood, and it does so in the name of Socialism”
If you like it, might I recommend her Oryx and Crake trilogy? The first book blew my mind into tiny pieces. The second and third were also good, but hot damn. If Handmaid’s Tale is a realistic social dystopia, O&C is a scientific one.
It’s essentially the same thing as the nazi Lebensborn program that did, in fact, exist for ten years or so, combined with the current evangelical christian practice of exploiting poor, unwed mothers in to giving their babies up for adoption to loving, righteous christian families.
Read the book a few years ago and thought: “I like sci-fi and dystopian tales, but can’t quite place this story in a plausible, near future”.
I wish there had been a way of including more POC actors that didn’t downplay the ideas of racial purity and reproduction that were so important to the leadership of Gilead. That was one of the elements I really liked about the first film, and it helped underscore how fucked up the place was. Even with how abused…
“An inspiring tale of the future” -the GOP
most terrifying book i’ve ever read. looking forward to this.
The book is a modern classic. If the tv show doesn’t stray too far from the ethos of the book, then this could be one of the best shows of the year.
So we’re all gonna call Toomey’s office to teach them what graphic descriptions of the menstrual cycle are like, right?
This makes me sad and should not be happening. Women need to be taught about their bodies from a young age. I’ve been able to differentiate my vaginal opening from my asshole for as long as I could remember. Men, should also learn these things, but seeing as they consistently prove themselves to be generally useless,…
Jeebus, when are these dumbass fuckers going to realize that freely available contraceptives is an amazing way to prevent abortions?
And you still didn’t get it. Jesus wept.
Jesus wept.
I disagree. She’s broken in that she no longer tries to escape—it’s implied that Offred probably does.
I think, frankly, you don’t understand the book. Sorry.
But she’s not free. She’s a sex slave, just more blatantly so than Offred. It’s clear that Moira’s a tragic figure.
Yeah, Moira’s fate isn’t positive—the sense is that she’s not going to make it. She has even fewer protections than Offred.
Well, didn’t she get her hands broken as punishment for her “unruliness”? I mean, when she shrugged it off and said at least she can sleep with other girls, it didn’t mean that she still didn’t have to sleep with all these gross men and be treated like an animal only valued for her sex parts. I think the point of the…
