I remain convinced that West is just a retro-minded hack with great taste. House of the Devil disappointed me hard. Looks terrific, but the story is little more than a series of homage-y plot points stitched end to end—practically a Madlib rather than a script. X was better, but I wouldn’t say I was clamoring for it…

I agree. It’s wildly overrated, mainly because Ledger’s performance — though kind of a Hannibal Lector riff in a lot of ways — is so propulsive it leaps straight over most of the sophomoric clunkiness and gaping plot holes.

I feel like Upstart Crow makes a very deliberate joke of the anachronism in and of itself, and the problem with a show like this one, in contrast, is that it can’t quite make a joke about it because it also has to be a “cool” romance, i.e. something aspirational that you *want* to imagine yourself into.
