I wonder if that’s partly the fault of how we consume media currently. As a reviewer do you go into a review as informative semi-preview for the uninitiated or do you assume that the readership has already partaken of the material and you’re engaging in conversation?

That’s definitely one of the problems of documentary. How much does the audience already know? And who is the audience? Obviously they are very different animals but I had a similar reaction to the Ron Howard Disney+ doc on Jim Henson. Most of us who are Henson fans already knew everything they covered in that

Yeah, I had a similar reaction when that statement first hit. I found it to be thoughtful and genuine.

I think an important part of the kink was that he could influence the careers of these women. I think there was a power element. I doubt he would have pulled his dick out in front of established comedians like Ellen or Kathleen Madigan or Caroline Rhea.

FWIW I’ve read a couple of other reviews of the doc that say essentially the same thing. It’s too much recap that people who would want to watch the doc already know.

No, ableism is a perfectly fine concept to explain a specific set of discriminatory beliefs and practices. Agree or disagree with its application, there is nothing “moronic” about it and activists around the issue are not “lunatic people”. Having *this much* ire for the concept sure sounds pretty looney to me, though.

No, I agree with your idea of breakout. It’s “bizarre” that is the issue. I’m not intending to be a dick when I copy+paste the definition here so hopefully it doesn’t come off that way.

Fair!

I wonder if any of it has to do with their respective backgrounds. I know Gaga was a performing arts kid and did some acting prior to her music career. IIRC she was in the literal school from Fame. And Perry was a god-bothering goody-goody.

I suppose in this particular era a song from 4 years ago might feel “super dated”. I’m being both entirely serious and eye-rolling sarcastic here. Like my knee-jerk is to say “oh fuck off” but also you might be right.

That’s a great call bringing Gaga into the conversation because I think you’re on to something there. There are overtly sexual feminist artists who don’t feel as manufactured/fake as Katy Perry to me. Maybe my view was tainted early on with her queerbait anthem “I Kissed a Girl”, which I’ve always felt was incredibly

I’m happy to be corrected if there are Perry fans around who can set me straight but it sure does *seem* to me like she enjoys a certain degree of pop “girl power” appeal that is in actuality mostly lip service. She *seems* like the kind of person who uses sex positivity as a cloak for indulging exactly the kind of

It remains bizarre that you don’t know how to apply the word bizarre to a situation.

What part of “overcorrection” do you not get?

Lorne keeps around anyone he likes personally. I don’t think he gives all that much of a shit about consensus. Which isn’t to say that he is immune to input. But I think you could probably be mediocre and stick around if Lorne liked you personally.

In the longer convo I come back to this but you’re not wrong generally. As a response to MY response? I dunno. I mean... Joe may be obscure to most mainstream audiences but he has made a very long career on that last name. Whether he has had the KIND of success that his brother Martin enjoyed or his nephew or son is,

The answer is the internet, particularly social media. It’s widely-discussed because we have a greater ability to widely discuss it.

If Mike Nelson name checked me in a joke more than once I would consider that pretty impressive.

To be fair, I think it helps me a great deal to be a fan of MST3K and Rifftrax. Joe has appeared in many bad genre films over the years, some of which have been riffed.

Okay, let’s see. “fascists, stalinists, inquisition-type losers” and now “nazi”.
