Beautifully stated. I'm so weary of reading about cancer survivors and victims dealing with their illness with "grace and dignity", as if that's the only acceptable way to cope. Until one has been through it, one has no right to tell others how to deal with it. Cancer sucks and whomever is unlucky enough to suffer

This show is pure fantasy, and a dangerous one: by forcing contestants to lose weight via extreme amounts of high intensity exercise and starvation diets, the show all but guarantees that some of them are going to gain some or all of the weight right back. There is no way to build a healthy metabolism—which requires

If you know anything about addiction, you would never dare say that addiction can be "cured." Talk to an actual addict sometime. Addiction is something that is MANAGED, not cured.

While I myself have not struggled with addiction nor have lost anyone to this awful disease, I am at least aware enough to know that addiction IS A DISEASE, that one never really recovers from it, one only learns how to manage it, and it is always there, ready to overcome the victim. The tragedy is not that a man

And yet, somehow, the women in this film all turn out to be classic misogynist archetypes, and fulfill classic misogynist tropes: all the women who don't say much or who act like nincompoops end up marrying/screwing their bosses, while the few women who actually have something intelligent, forceful or non-doormat to

OMG, this is the Best. Takedown. Ever of a movie I found so unbelievably offensive, misogynist and altogether gross. It was as if it were written by a couple of really bitter old men who got dumped a lot and decided to take out their frustrations in a shitty screenplay. But how cleverly they hide their Woman Hate

I think DeRogatis has it exactly right: society doesn't care about young black women. The only time society seems to get exorcised about violence done to women is when the victims are young and white. Think of how different the story would have been if Lacey Peterson were black.

That is arguably the sexiest Glasses Removal gif ever.

This is a totally superficial question but why in Dog's name do the Bratz dolls lack noses?! It's almost as creepy as their swanky outfits and come hither poses. (And aren't Bratz dolls marketed to 8 year olds? Ewwwww)

I will need to refer to the book again, but I love how Catching Fire the movie gave us two Rue moments: the tribute to her during the Victory tour and Peeta's illustration. Both were a punch to the gut. But Rue's death left me gutted.

Whatevs. Team Peeta. There are plenty of good reasons for that, including that I've read the books. ;)

Why would you be surprised that a feminist website would call out a group with an international profile, like PETA, when it engages—with rather depressing regularity—in using misogynist images, advertising and rhetoric to advance its cause?

For the record: I am an animal lover, and I eat meat. One can care deeply about the welfare of animals, demand humane treatment of animals (in particular by buying animals from local farmers that give their animals pasture, grass, freedom to move, fresh air, etc.) and still eat them.
