I thought the movie made it pretty clear she was trying to cope with whatever her father did growing up. IIRC Forrest's narration even mentioned she had sisters that are never discussed again.

Actually seeing The Walk in IMAX was pretty anti-climactic. For every shot that looked legit intense there were five or six where the large screen made the so-so effects stand out like a sore thumb. Constantly took me out of the movie.
