Agreed. It’s an asymmetrical relationship/situation. The picker has very little to offer in exchange and is asking for a favor. It’s better to be upfront about that. Unless you’re really confident that the pickee sees value in your perspective, offering it will make them far less likely to accept.
I know this will never happen and probably impractical, but why don’t we have a voter test, before we’re allowed to vote, just like a driver’s license test, before you can drive.

Nice to hear that someone is doing something about it. I was lucky that most of professors didn’t require textbooks, even though the class/course did. The class itself and supplemental information usually sufficed.
