It’s almost as though groups of people are still, at their core, individuals.

We always seem to recognize this within our own peer groups. “Well, certainly there are SOME bad people in X group, but not I, and not others I know!”...but then something like this happens and immediately that distinction is lost.

Regardless

Yes, but she’s making statements about the supposed health of models *now*. It’s like the Born Again Christian throwing shade at us decrepit sinners without acknowledging that, day before yesterday, they were one of us. The less ass-hat approach would be, “As a someone who once helped sell cigarettes, I think it’s

She still isn’t African-American, whether you want to quibble with Pueto Rico being America or not. She is an Afro-Latina it is different to being African-American.

But I don’t think the people with African roots from either place consider themselves African American. I have both Afro Puerto Rican and Afro Dominican friends who don’t consider themselves African American despite being born in the US. Although she might, but I doubt it. I have heard her identify with her

I think she's Dominican-American and Puerto Rican- American. She's not African-American.

“Did we expect her to give up this role in the name of facial features?”

The real problem with casting Zoe Saldana is that she has benefitted from white supremacy in the industry; Nina was victimized by it. Though they are both black women, they represent almost entirely different existences, and it is this contradiction many black women have the most trouble with.

I didn’t put any blame on her in the beginning however no one wanted to see her in this part including Nina Simone’s daughter and instead of respecting people’s wishes she ignored them went ahead and contributed to colorism in the movie industry and it is a serious problem that if you don’t know about you can ignore

I want to know ALL the history that the white males left out of the history books (speaking as a white male).

It’s irrelevant what term you would use. You can call it whatever you want for your own purposes. But, for the purposes of this discussion (in which we are specifically talking about Zoe Saldana portraying Nina Simone on the big screen) it should be obvious what we mean when we use the terms “light-skinned” and

This is racism in Hollywood. This is what it looks like.

As a dark-skinned woman, it’s so crushing to me that they so desperately needed to cast a lighter woman they opted for BLACKFACE and PROSTHETICS. While there are fine actresses who more closely resemble Simone (who also sing!!). What a long way to go to be hurtful.

that makeup looks bad. Nina Simone was a beautiful smooth skinned black woman. That makeup LOOKS like black face. It’s smear-y and streak-y and she looks like an ignorant FSU sorority girl making a bad decision on instagram.

My God.

I recently came across the term “Toxic Ally Syndrome”, via Jim C Hines’s blog: someone who is “so determined to be an ‘ally’ of Group X that [they] ignore or argue with members of Group X because [they] know best. This is often followed by choruses of, ‘Why are you getting angry at me? I’m your ally! Fine, if you’re

Nope, he was actually trying to get Hillary to spread her insult out to more people to reduce its potency.

Literally everything I write on his website is for my own amusement.

It annoys me when people say “skin color” when what they really mean is “race.” This Chinese woman sitting next to me at work is three shades lighter than the white woman sitting behind me. It’s not her skin color that has people constantly asking her where she’s “really” from. (Queens. She’s from fucking Queens.)
