my mom (also jane's mom) took me to a Clinique counter, the day before i started 6th grade, and bought me a minimally pigmented cheek stain, lip gloss and clear mascara, "this is what you are allowed to wear to school." the price tag made me feel really grown-up, and the look is something i still rely on.
