Super frustrating. Academia gives way too much power to unaccountable (largely white, male) professors, and so many of them are quick to abuse it. And then there’s the old “I can’t be sexist, I’m a democrat and I teach at a university, you’re just repressed”.

Mrs. Ghost has worked in academia her entire career and teaches in the social sciences. She’s had a lot of the same experiences. Because she’s conventionally pretty, she was regularly and openly propositioned by older colleagues and professors well into her 30s.

Thanks for writing this. Academia is a sewer. I still work in higher ed because of the students, but every other week I seriously consider bailing and finding a place of work whose framework wasn’t literally built to enshrine and sustain abusive behavior.

This was a hard one to read because I watched the same shit happen to so many female classmates, grad students and PHD candidates when I was an undergrad. It’s why I didn’t pursue higher degrees and I imagine the same is true for so many women who leave academia when they have more to contribute.

Gosh that was enraging to read, much less living it. Each bullet point brought its own brand of awful. “The same professor” is probably still there, perpetuating this same harassment on another woman with the help of feckless, ineffectual “allies”.

Side note here: In my master’s program, when it was evaluation time, if I had a TA I just wrote they were the best TA I ever had in my life, high scores across the board, pay them more money. Same for non-tenured professors.

At the high school I teach in, everyone with a PhD goes by Dr except the (only) two men with doctorates.
