For the game, 100% agreed. For the show, I would disagree because their props, sets, and costume designs are amazing. The fact that they chose to adorn the Lannister armies in a sort of hybrid samurai-medieval armor was awesome, and many of the council members wear a mix of roman/Chinese attire. Ditto to a world…
Martin also enjoys subverting standard fantasy tropes, and also doesn't care about fan favorites: lots of beloved and prominent characters are killed off at will. The POV structure from unreliable narrators are extremely well-written and well-inhabited, and he writes strong female characters like nobody's business.
