That sounds like the media's job to check facts. The justice system could also do the same if push came to shove. They would just need to subpoena the police departments and at that point, it would simply be matching leaked emails to those found in discovery.
Don't get me wrong, I love our IT guy and gal. But the trend is going to be shrinking that requirement and industry down in the future, not expanding it. SaaS/"The Cloud" will essentially put a lot of these guys out of business (or make it much leaner), doesn't mean its inferior to an on-premise solution.
