Similar shit happened on a mom forum I used to be on. The groups run by the site were open to anyone, but people could also make private groups. I heard plenty of horror stories of white women with no business being there joining the black mom's group simply because they could, and then starting all kinds of shit.

Having lived in both, the south is definitely louder and seems prouder of their racism. The racism up north is much more subtle and coded most of the time.
