No worries. It's a bit unclear at first read of the essay but the relationship Roupenian had with Charles was when she was in her 30s.

There's drawing details and then there's writing with a lot of specific details about 2 people and then when you get to the private and intimate parts of those people's lives making stuff up that makes them seem either misogynistic and unable to handle rejection or dumb and easily led.

Roupenian was in grad school yes. But she was in her mid 30s. Nothing wrong with being grad in school at that age but she’s not young enough to excuse the stupid thing

It’s quite clearly about how the petty foibles and egos of people far more powerful than you or I can end us instantly with no recrimination.

Kendall Roy is the lest smug scion of a rich family I’ve ever seen. He’s like an exposed nerve ending.

Bingo. So weird how people are missing this and focusing on whether the "message is good".

It’s funny then that the first season walks the line with even more confidence, nonchalance and vulnerability/earnestness than even BoJack but as soon as they tried to address the critics wanting more humanity in Rick and the show itself the series went from brilliant and perfect to simply a very clever and funny show.

Hawley is a good example of why you shouldn't really give a fan who "gets the work" free range.  He's not wrong here but his execution is going to be awful.

You definitely haven't.

Subverting “The Hero’s Journey” is a fun exercise in being clever but it’s also banal and impossible to pull off satisfactorily in blockbuster sized mythic cinema.

They maybe idiots but they weren’t dumb enough to kill themselves just because of a movie. No one is.

I love this particular social media war because it’s so fucking funny to see people claiming none of this is explicitly sexual and it’s just the viewers interpretation therefore it’s not a breach.

Sorry. I was being facetious to a certain someone and the attitude carried over. My bad had a few beers.

Yeah you’re exactly right here. Just write, cast etc more obviously LGBTQ people in the same roles you'd put ahine else in. Then the change will be on screen and won't be diminished either.

Thast a good point. I’d guess my only other question (having only read a few fanfic works)... is it an explicit exercise in confounding and denying such tropes ( e.g. The Wide Sargasso Sea) or is it indulging in them and from people who aren’t necessarily the demographic being portrayed?

It's not meant to be considered a literal death. It's that once is work public it's the publics. Which yes of course. But the corollary is any follow ups are the author's until its public.

The Frodo and Sam being gay for each other (acknowledged or not by the characters) is fun but no less pertinent to the text than a class based reading of Sam being a dutiful working class salt of the earth hobbit serving his master. Both fun intellectual exercises to apply to the text but that's all they are.

friendships are seen as gay and/or at least, anti-masculine.”

*Boys and men are overwhelmingly socialized to only experience emotions like anger, pride, frustration, etc. They are implicitly or explicitly taught that their same sex friendships are largely superficial”

Yes she's a work of art.
