The problem with the timer in Super Mario 3D World outside of a couple of levels is that it was both way too long to create any sense of urgency yet not long enough to allow you to slow down and explore the levels looking for green stars, something the game actively wanted you to do.
The problem is when you bump into one of the waitresses they all go flying everywhere.
