I think most of the comments here sum it up. It has two weak protagonists in Vaan and Penelo, but some really amazing ones in Ashe, Balthier, and Basch. The director of stuff like Vagrant Story, Tactics Ogre, and Final Fantasy Tactics was behind it for a good chunk of development. So you have to go into it open with the notion that it won’t play like any other FF.

Its my favorite one. Take that as you will. Huge fan of the series and just recently went through it again. Anything in Ivalice is just brilliant. Give it a go!

I don’t think Vaan was the main character. He was more like the eyes or some kind of spectator you use to experience the journey of the true main characters of the game. Ashe or even Basch were more important and were more prevalent in the story than Vaan.

I’d say Vayne is about as much a Final Fantasy villain as you’d get.

I heard some rumor that Vaan and Panelo weren’t supposed to be in the game but the marketing team at SQEX said that they need teenager characters to broaden the target demographics. That’s the reason why both of their existences are weak. It was said that Baltheir and Ashe were meant to be main characters.

Weak characters? I’d say everyone outside of Vaan and Panelo (which is almost intended) are pretty great. Some of the best in a Final Fantasy game. That includes some of the more periphery characters, like Gabranth, Vossler and Reddas.

It’s broken. Flawed summons and limit breaks. It’s also unfinished. But it’s also the best Final Fantasy game.
